Set it off is an American crime
action film directed by F. Gary Gary.
This movie was released November 6, 1996. This movie is about a bank
teller who got fired from her job for knowing the person who robbed the bank. She
begins to work at a cleaning service with her friends. The four women are barely
making it with their finances so they decide to start robbing banks. They had
great success in the beginning but soon they have an fixated detective on their
trail.
This movie possesses two traits of
having a strong “hook”. In the beginning of the movie a bank teller is being
robbed and she knows her robbers. She refuses to give the robbers the money so
they shoot an innocent bystander. There is then a shootout between robbers and
bank security. The security guard is shot dead but majority of the bank robbers
get away. The movie was opened with
conflict. Conflict at the beginning of a movie grabs the audience’s attention
and makes them want to watch more of the movie (Weiland 339). This beginning
scene also set the tone for the movie. Setting the tone gives the spectators an
idea about the type of movie they are going to be watching. (Weiland 339).
